District Goals of Summer Reading

  • Summer reading will be an enjoyable, positive part of the “culture” of the school.
  • Summer reading is for all SBISD secondary students and is designed to improve fluency in reading.
  • Summer reading will promote reading as a social activity that fosters discussion, response, and student-centered activities and assessments.
  • Summer reading will include high-interest texts and, ideally, will offer students choice of texts that can be read without teacher support.
  • Summer reading instruction and assessment will be completed during the first grading period of the school year.
  • Teachers will be able to use summer reading texts as examples and comparisons with other texts throughout the year.
